The Kopelman Quartet was founded in 2002 by Mikhail Kopelman, who had once been the leader of the A.P. Borodin Quartet for twenty years. The quartet includes  outstanding musicians who graduated from the Moscow Conservatory in the 1970s - the "golden age" of the university. In the 1990s, the musicians left Russia, and their paths crossed in London, where the quartet was formed.

Rightfully recognized as one of the best chamber ensembles in the world, the Kopelman Quartet performs in the world's largest concert halls: the Vienna Musikverein, the Amsterdam Concertgebouw, and London's Wigmore Hall. Among the stage partners of the quartet are E. Leonskaya, M. Maisky, I. Golan, Yu. Rakhlin and others.

The quartet tours extensively in the UK, Spain, Portugal, Austria, Italy, the Netherlands, Belgium, Denmark, Sweden, Switzerland, Slovakia, the USA, Canada and Russia. The musicians took part in prestigious music festivals in Edinburgh, Valladolid, Zurich, Chicago (Ravinia), Colmar, Prague (Prague Spring) and others. The band's discography includes recordings of music by S. Prokofiev, D. Shostakovich, N. Myaskovsky, P. Tchaikovsky and F. Schubert, released by Wigmore Live and Nimbus.

Mikhail Kopelman was awarded the Royal Philharmonic Society Prize and the Honorary Silver Medal of the Concertgebouw. Boris Kushnir and Igor Sulyga were the founders of the Moscow String Quartet and worked with Dmitri Shostakovich on his last compositions for this lineup. Boris Kushnir is a professor at the Vienna University of Music, who has trained such famous students as Julian Rakhlin and Nikolai Znaider. Plays Antonio Stradivari's La Rouse Boughton violin (1703), provided by the Austrian National Bank. Igor Sulyga played for twenty years with Vladimir Spivakov in the Moscow Virtuosos orchestra and string quartet. Mikhail Milman was the cello accompanist of the Moscow Virtuosos orchestra for two decades and collaborated with the A.P. Borodin Quartet.
